1899年光绪二十五年奉天机器局铸造,该套银币打破了中国历代以两钱纪重的习惯,是我国较早采用以圆计值的流通银币之一。清代的奉天省就是今天的辽宁省,清政府于光绪二十二年根据盛京将军依克唐阿的奏请,批准设立并筹建奉天机器局以铸造机制银币,从德国进口锅炉和以蒸汽机为动力的铸币机器,光绪二十三年(1897年)奉天机器局建成。根据历史文献记载,当年该局就铸行了没有干支纪年的“奉天省造光绪元宝”,该币铸额小传世甚罕,不为广大钱币收藏者和研究者所熟悉,所有由民间人士编撰的银币图录中都没有该银币的实物图片资料。光绪二十五年,该局铸造发行了一套以圆为单位的银币,光绪二十八年(1902年),奉天机器局的造币厂从机器局分离并更名为奉天银元局。
