田黄石,简称“田黄”,因产于福州市寿山乡“寿山溪”两旁之水稻田底下、呈黄色而得名,为寿山石中最优良的品种之一。它有广义的和狭义的之分:广义的田黄石指“田坑石”,狭义的田黄石指田坑石中之发黄色者。在物理性质、工艺美术特征等方面,田黄石与寿山石基本相同或相近,但因其珍稀和昂贵,故早已成为独立的印章石品种。

田黄石质地宝洁、透明、通灵,肌里纹路隐约如丝,明显细致,宛如萝线纹。寿山石的筋格有好几种,而田黄石的筋格唯有红色盘格一种,在一块田黄石上表里的色调是可能变化的,因此,田黄石方章价值更高。将田黄石锯成方章,前人谓之“解石”,古人有“解石之难难于上青天”之说。这是因为田黄石很难从外表看出其色调是否表里一致,锯开来也许数倍增值,也许价落万丈。田黄石大多为卵状,故用手抚摸时会有圆顺温润之感,一块好的田黄石还须经艺术加工,加工的手法有薄意、浮雕、圆雕和制成方章。田黄石日渐稀少价格扶摇直上,易金三倍之说早已过时。
